KL Report
SRINAGAR
Areas still submerged under water had problems in offering the Friday prayers. People living around Maisuma, Budshah Chowk and Koker Bazar offered their prayers on the Budshah Bridge.
In a number of mosques where the water level has reduced, the faithful offered their prayers in the first floor as the ground floor would require cleansing. Some mosques in the submerged Srinagar, there were no prayers at all because access to the mosques was blocked.
Mosques remained the main refuge in most of the severely affected localities. In Rajbagh, Kursoo and Jawahar Nagar, hundreds of people found their refuge in the mosques when the waters from Jhelum gushed into the localities. Most of the rescue efforts were made from the mosques by SDRF, NDRF, volunteers and the security agencies.
Now, in number of the localities, the mosques have converted into the relief centres. Some of the mosques still house the flood affected people regardless of the faith like that of the Jamia Masjid in Hyderpora. In certain cases the relief being received by the localities is being stocked in the mosques for onward distribution to ensure it reaches the needy.
