SRINAGAR: The Central government will aim to secure approval for the Women’s Reservation Bill in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday.
Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal will introduce the bill for discussion and approval. The Women’s Reservation Bill, formally known as the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty Eighth Amendment) Bill, 2023, was added to the Lok Sabha’s agenda on Tuesday.
The bill proposes a 15-year duration for the reservation, with provisions for reserved seats for women from the Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST).
Sources indicate that its implementation is unlikely during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. It is expected to be put into effect only after the completion of the delimitation process, which is likely to occur around 2029.
Under this bill, reserved seats for women will be subject to rotation after each delimitation exercise. Additionally, the government will seek the introduction and approval of the Advocates (Amendment) Bill, 2023, in the Lok Sabha on the same day.
Notably, this bill has already received approval from the Rajya Sabha.
