A youth was released by police on Monday after people led by separatist leader Nayeem Ahmed Khan blocked the highway and staged a peaceful sit-in outside police station Pattan in North Kashmir’s Baramulla district.
Reports said that on 18 August, Special Operations Group (SOG) had picked up a youth Reyaz Ahmed Bhat during a nocturnal raid from his Wailo Pattan residence. The family members and people led by Nayeem Khan blocked Srinagar-Muzaffarabad road outside police station Pattan demanding immediate release of the arrested youth. Eyewitnesses told CNS that vehicular movement came to a stand-still after the protesters did not allow any vehicle to pass through the road.
A police party led by SDPO Pattan arrived on spot and assured the release of the youth without any delay. “Protest sit-in came to an end after the police released the arrested youth. It was all due to efforts put by Nayeem Sahab and the personal intervention of SDPO Pattan,” said a protester.
When contacted an SOG officer said that Reyaz was picked up for questioning in connection with the attacks on mobile towers in Sopore and Pattan towns. “After questioning he was released and handed over to his family members,” he said.
Meanwhile an army trooper ‘accidentally’ misfired his gun at a little girl during a search operation, resulting in her injury in North Kashmir’s Pattan town on Sunday night.
Family sources informed that on Sunday night an Army party from 29 RR cordoned off Wailoo Pattan area after they received inputs about the presence of militants in the village.
“The Army personnel entered into my house and suddenly my class 3rd daughter Insha Habib received a bullet injury after a soldier misfired his gun. The army men immediately rushed her to 92 Base Army hospital in Badamibagh Srinagar,” Habibullah Sheikh said.
The protesting family Monday staged a protest against the incident and while conceding to their demand police registered an FIR vide number 152/2015 under 325 against the accused Army man.
When contacted, an Army official said that it was an accidental fire. “It was an unfortunate incident. The bullet first hit the army man and after rebounding from the wall it hit the little girl. Both the army man and the little girl are being treated in the hospital and they both are stable,” he said.
