Police in collaboration with Narcotics Central Bureau, Crime Branch Kashmir and Revenue Departments Thursday launched an intensified drive for bhung (opium) destruction in South Kashmir’s Shopian district.
The drive was started from Vandina, Malhora village of Zainapora Shopian where bhung on hundreds of kanals of the land was destroyed and later set afire on the first day.
“As per preliminary reports and surveys conducted over a vast area of agricultural, orchid and non-agricultural land is under illegal cultivation of hemp in the district during the current Kharief season,” said SDPO Zainapora, Muzaffar Jan, who along with SHO Zainapora and others destroyed bhung and other narcotic plant cultivations. “Following the tip off about cultivation of bhung, Department framed a well evolved and multi pronged strategy for bhung destruction which took of formally today.
On the occasion, SSP Shopian Altaf Khan asked the officers and officials of the department to intensify their efforts for making the District Bhung and narcotic free.
