Census 2011: JK’s Disabled Population Reduced by a Margin

In the last one decade, J&K has reduced its disabled population by a margin.

As the population of Jammu and Kashmir rose from 10143700 (5360926 males and 4782774 females) to 12548926 (6665561 males and 5883365 females) in one last decade, the disability ratio of the total population has comparatively come down in the state of Jammu and Kashmir.

Notably, JK made 0.99% of India’s total population in 2001; the 2011 Census says the population ratio has risen to 1.04%.

As per the details available with Kashmir Life, the total disabled population, as per Census 2001, in Jammu and Kashmir was 302,670 with 272,816 males and 130,853 females making it 2.98% of the total population.

The latest Census report of 2011 shows a total of 361153 people with different disability problems in Jammu and Kashmir making it 2.87% of the total figure.

The Census 2011 data says that out of 262354 households, 361153 have disabled people; 204834 males, rest 156319 females.

The split data of the total population with disabilities says that a total number of 66448 people have seeing disability with 35656 males and 30792 females.

74096 persons cannot hear out of which 42744 are males and 31352 females. 18681 people cannot speak with 11351 males and 7330 females.

The persons who cannot move / walk on their own make 58137of the total disability population with 35145 males and 22992 females.

People with mental retardation are 16724 with 9798 males and 6926 females while people with mental illness are 15669 with 8810 and 6859 females.

The data further reveals that people with ‘other’ disabilities are 66957 out of which 36852 are males while 30105 are females.

People with multiple disabilities are 44441 with 24478 males and 19963 females.

The details maintains, for the age group of 0 to 6, the number of disabled children stand at 27939.

The census 2011 data says that out of 27939 disabled children, 5537 cannot see. 7352 children have hearing disability while 1324 children cannot speak.

The details further reveal that 2589 children falling in the same age group cannot walk while 1174 are mentally retarded and 474 have mental illness.

2512 children have multiple disabilities while 6977 fall in the category of ‘other’ disability.
