HARASSING:
Major Ravi of army’s 29 Rashtriya Rifles posted in Watergam, Baramulla district is allegedly harassing youth and asking them to act as informers. Ravi, who often travels in private vehicles along with his gunmen, intercepts young local boys and subjects them to harassment, a local newspaper reported. “He wants every boy in the village to become army informer. Otherwise, why should he distribute the slips carrying his name and number,” said a local boy.
DIRECTED:
The state high court has directed Inspector General of Police, Crime Branch, to exercise overall supervision in the probe of CET scam so that any extraneous influence in execution of arrest warrants against 15 accused still at large is effectively checked. The direction came after the court observed that the accused must be wielding influence and would be approaching power echelons to evade their arrest.
DIRECTED:
The state high court directed the Attorney General of India to depute an officer to assist it in proper utilization of funds for conservation of Wular—one of the largest freshwater lakes in north Kashmir’s Bandipora. The bench said all orders of this case may be sent to the AG so that the court is assisted on the next date of hearing. However, it would be appropriate to direct that the details of implementation of various projects be explained by filing a detailed affidavit.
SEIZED:
The sleuths of Forest Protection Force (FPF) have seized 110 kilograms of medicinal herbs-nagchatri and 25 kilograms of khour from Akramabad, Doda. Acting on a tip off, FPF sleuths intercepted a Bolero at Akramabad on Doda-Jammu highway but two people, including the driver, escaped from the spot. During the search of the vehicle, 110 kilograms of banned forest produce ‘nagchatri’ and 25 kilograms of another banned medicinal herb ‘khour’ was seized along with the vehicle. A case has been registered in this regard and manhunt has been launched to nab the accused.
DEAD:
Anil Kumar (50), a Border Security Force (BSF) Sub Inspector (SI) was found dead under mysterious circumstances at BSF Training Centre, 35 STC Roun Domail. Kumar, son of Padman Kumar of Kerala, was found dead under mysterious circumstances in washroom at BSF Training Centre, 35 STC Roun Domail. On getting information, police rushed to the spot and shifted the body to District Hospital and after conducting the postmortem, the body was handed over to BSF authorities. A case under Section 174 CrPC has been registered by police and investigation started.
ARrESTED:
Khour police arrested a pujari, Bhawan Dass, son of Ashu Ram, who had raped an insane girl at Khunda, Jammu. Dass has been booked under Section 376 RPC at Khour police station. Further investigation is on.
FACELIFT:
The over 100 kilometres long Srinagar-Muzaffarabad highway will get a facelift due to the additional works by Beacon authorities to spruce it up ahead of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s first visit to Jammu and Kashmir. The Beacon authorities have already patched up potholes which result due to snow and wintry conditions. Macadamization of few stretches has also been completed along the highway. Besides, repair works have been completed on parapet walls, painting all along the highway which about 115 kilometers from Srinagar to Kaman post near Line of control. Pertinently, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was scheduled to inaugurate the power project but the programme was deferred due to a technical snag.
ARRESTED:
Madhya Pradesh police have arrested a man who shot dead a Kashmiri executive on point-blank range in Indore city last week. The accused, Govind Verma, was arrested six days after killing Tahir Hussain Dar, 34, a deputy manager in Intex Electronics Company on June 24. Dar was a resident of Sonawar, Srinagar. The police have put Verma’s mobile phone on surveillance and that is how he was arrested. He was absconding for a week now.
SOUGHT:
State high court sought status report of reinvestigation into 1991 mass rape case of Kunan-Poshpora. It also sought a report, by the next date of hearing, regarding ex-gratia relief to the victims. Kunan and Poshpora, twin villages of Kupwara had witnessed one of the worst incidents of mass rape during the intervening night of February 23 and 24 in 1991, by the soldiers of 4-Rajputana Rifles of 68 Brigade. The direction came after victims filed a protest petition in the court against the police’ closure report. Subsequently Army filed an appeal against the order of the Judicial Magistrate in Sessions Court Kupwara.
DIRECTED:
The Supreme Court has directed the Jammu and Kashmir government to concentrate on efforts to restore the pristine beauty of the Dal Lake in Srinagar. The direction was given by the court when it rejected the plea of the state government for discontinuing the service of Irfan Yasin, the Vice Chairman of the Lakes and Waterways Development Authority (LAWDA) whose term was extended after superannuation.
