Cong parts ways from NC, decides to go alone in polls

KL Report

JAMMU

The coalition partner of National Conference in J&K Sunday finally decided to part ways from NC and contest the upcoming assembly elections all alone without any poll alliance. Jammu and Kashmir will be going to polls later this year. The Congress has announced that the party will be contesting all assembly seats in Jammu and Kashmir.

The Congress has announced that the party will be contesting all assembly seats in J&K. After a meeting with party workers, who strongly protested against continuation of alliance with NC, the Congress top brass has decided to walk out of the coalition. Announcing party’s decision, senior Congress leader Ambika Soni said in Jammu, “Congress will contest all 87 Assembly seats in J&K alone.” Former state Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad present on the occasion added that in a coalition a lot of compromises have to be made and they are at times unacceptable in view of public welfare.

Earlier, Congress workers shared their views with the party top brass at one-day convention of the party held in Jammu and attended by senior Congress leaders, including party general secretary in charge of the state, Ambika Soni, former chief minister Ghulam Nabi Azad and state party chief Saifuddin Soz.

Bruised by their defeat in the Lok Sabha elections, in which the Congress lost all the three seats it fought in alliance with the National Conference, a majority of party workers asked the party leadership not to forge any alliance with the NC for the upcoming state assembly polls scheduled to be held by the year-end.

Congress sources said that in Jammu, speakers at Saturday’s convention blamed the NC for mis-governance and for treating the Congress as a “step- brother”. “Many angry workers also blamed their party’s ministers for ignoring the party’s interests in the over five years the NC-Congress alliance has been in power in Jammu and Kashmir,” Congress sources said.

Pertinently, the Congress has presently 17 members in the 87-member state legislative assembly.
