Army officer accused of forcing youth to act as informers

KL Report

SRINAGAR

Youth in a village of north Kashmir’s Baramullah district alleged that an army officer is harassing and forcing them to work as ‘informers’.

Talking to GNS over phone, the youth from Watergam alleged that Major Ravi of army’s 29 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) from last one month is harassing them. “The Major calls us to the camp. His main target is youth of the area. In the garb of frisking, the army men force us to open our school bags. He snatched mobile phones of some youth and later told them to come to the camp,” a youth, who wished not to be named, said.

The youth alleged that the officer is forcing them to work as army informers. “The major distributed paper slips on which his name and number is printed. After summoning to the camp, he asks us to work as army informer,” they alleged.

“Major Ravi is trying to create unnecessary trouble because if any untoward incident happens due to harassment, it will give them a chance to stay in the area,” another local youth said, adding: “We ask army authorities to take note of the issue.”

Major Ravi, when contacted, said: “Why are you interfering in my work. You are not my Commanding Officer. Why are you interviewing me?”

However, an army spokesman based in Srinagar said that he will look into the matter.
