Night Temperature Drops Across Kashmir, Pahalgam Freezes At Minus 11.6

SRINAGAR: The minimum temperatures has dropped below the freezing point at most places in the Valley on Wednesday.

“Due to the clear night sky, the minimum temperatures have dropped further below the freezing point at most places in the Valley. The weather is likely to remain mainly dry in the Jammu and Kashmir till January 16,” a Met department official said.

Kashmir is currently under the grip of ‘Chillai-Kalan’ the 40-day harshest period of winter when the chances of snowfall are most frequent and maximum and the temperature drops considerably.

Srinagar, the summer capital of the JK recorded a low of minus 3.6 while the mercury in Qazigund in south Kashmir settled at a low of minus 5.3 degrees Celsius.

Pahalgam – the famous health resort which also serves as one of the base camps for the annual Amarnath Yatra was the coldest place in Kashmir with a low of minus recorded a low of minus 11.6 degrees Celsius.

The night temperature in Gulmarg, the famous skiing resort in north Kashmir settled at a low of minus 11.5 degrees.

Kokernag town recorded a low of minus 7.2 degrees Celsius while Kupwara town in north Kashmir registered a low of minus 5.5 degrees Celsius last night.

Jammu recorded a low of 5.8 degrees Celsius while Batote recorded minus 0.3, Katra 5.7, Banihal recorded 1.0, and Bhaderwah recorded minus 3.4 degree Celsius.
