SRINAGAR: The meteorological department (MeT) on Thursday predicted light to moderate snowfall in Kashmir from December 4.
Sonam Lotus, Director of Meteorological Department, said, the first snow spell of this winter in Jammu and Kashmir and the adjoining area is most likely from December 4 evening to December 6 evening with main activity on December 5.
“Snowfall most likely to commence from a late night of December 4 increasing gradually in intensity and spatial distribution with a peak on December 5,” said Lotus in a statement.
He said that plains of Kashmir are likely to receive light (2-3Inches) of snowfall whereas higher reaches >2000m of J&K likely to receive Moderate snowfall (up to 6-7 inches).
“Some places on higher reaches may receive heavy snow on December 5 and light to moderate rain is also likely at most places of Jammu region as well,” he added.
This may lead to temporary disruption of traffic on passes like Sadna Top, Zojila, Sinthan Top, Mughal Road and Ramban-Banihal axis and may affect power supply on December 5.
Pahalgam – the famous health resort which also serves as one of the base camps for the annual Amarnath Yatra was the coldest place in the valley where minimum temperature settled at a low of minus 4.2 degrees.
The temperature in Gulmarg famous ski-resort in north Kashmir was recorded at a low of minus 1.5 degrees Celsius.
Srinagar, the summer capital of J&K recorded a low of minus 1.8 while the mercury in Qazigund in south Kashmir settled at a low of minus 1.5 degrees Celsius.
Kokernag town recorded a low of minus 1.4 degrees Celsius while Kupwara town in north Kashmir registered a low of minus 3.3 degrees Celsius last night.
Jammu city recorded 9.8 degrees Celsius, Katra town 10.2, Batote 5.9, Banihal 0.8 and Bhaderwah 4.8 as the minimum temperatures.
