Kashmir Internet Shutdowns For Peoples’ Safety, says Home Minister

SRINAGAR: Defending the frequent gags on the Internet and the imposition of curfew restrictions, Home Minister Amit Shah has said these measures were meant for people’s safety.

“I asked the youth there, who would die if the curfew is opened, and they said “we would”,” Shah is reported to have said at a summit organised by the Hindustan Times newspaper. “So, what those who were opposing the curfew wanted, is something the people of the country should determine.”

Kashmir is witnessing frequent Internet outages post-August 2019. Immediately after the reading down of Article 370, Kashmir witnessed the communication gag for months. Since last year, there have been 93 instances of Internet suspensions. Right now, most of Srinagar and pars in south Kashmir are getting Internet on intervals.
