The villagers of Lakhripora Budgam on Wednesday accused the R&B Division Budgam of mass irregularities in the construction of a bridge built at Lakhripora and road embankments.

Locals of the area alleged that the bridge that was constructed in 2012 at an estimated cost of Rs 48 lakhs has become unsafe to travel on.

They alleged that the concerned engineer and the contractor compromised on the quality of the material that was used in the construction.

Some of the elders of the village said that in the garb of completing the bridge, contractors diverted massive funds meant for roads which left the road construction in the area incomplete.

To the embarrassment of the department, the embankments constructed along the roads have crumbled within days. The locals alleged that the contractor has used substandard material in its construction.

Junior Engineer, R & B Budgam, Nazir Ahmad Rather said the department lacked manpower due to which it was not possible to keep a check on the sites regularly.

Executive Engineer R & B division Budgam, Kacho Mehmood assured that, he will look into the matter and assured that the safety of the bridge would not be compromised.
