The letter by the SSP reads: “Please provide details of mosques and their management falling within your respective jurisdictions as per enclosed proforma to this office immediately for onward submission to higher authorities.”

Marked as urgent, the zones were required to submit the information latest by 10 am on 29 July. The required information includes district, details of jurisdiction, name of the mosque, ideological affiliation, name of the local imam (priest) and the management head.

The letter was sent to SP City of South Zone, Hazratbal Zone, North Zone, East Zone and West Zone Srinagar.

Reports said that a similar drive has been started across the Valley.

The order, which is being widely circulated on social media, has added to the speculation that the Centre might have plans to abrogate Article 35A.

These speculations have dominated the discourse in Kashmir over the past few days after the Centre decided to send an additional 100 companies of central armed paramilitary forces to the valley.

Earlier on Saturday, a letter by a Railway Protection Force (RPF) official in Budgam asking employees to stock ration for at least four months and take other steps due to “forecast of the deteriorating situation” in the Kashmir Valley “for a long period” created a flutter.

The order issued mentions a series of precautionary measures for railway staff including sending back the families of security forces personnel to their native places.

“Staff should keep their pithu bags ready with sufficient amount of eatables, drinking water, chocolates, money for emergency purpose,” the order reads.
