In a scathing attack on the government and Baramulla sub-jail authorities, Dukhtaran-e-Millat (DeM) on Friday said that the “so-called” rulers have “not only turned” whole Kashmir into a concentration camp but “also made the lives of those in jails, a hell”.

DeM expressed serious concern and anguish over the plight of inmates in the jail.

In a statement issued here this evening, DeM secretary general, Nahida Nasreen said, “the attack is a glaring example of ugly brutalism of rulers. Hundreds of prisoners have virtually been cut off even from water and food.”

“The attack on Baramulla jail inmates reminds us of those days when prisoners used to be tortured in jails and their cells used to be attacked by goons in uniform,” she said, “the reports emanating from the jail suggest that the jail inmates are in immediate need of medical treatment, as they have not eaten anything from past several days.”

The DeM secretary general further said that the inmates have been “deprived” of their rights and their health condition has worsened “showing that how difficult it has become for these youth to get justice”.

“The jail superintendent, Rajini Sehgal, has herself beaten many inmates and injured them. Some inmates, according to some reports, have even suffered fractures and none of them has been provided medical aid.”

“The inmates have been deprived of food, water and necessary treatment. Even the daily Mulakat has been stopped. Those who go for Mulakat are abused and accused by the jail authorities,” Nasreen said, “the Baramulla jail has been turned into Abu Gharib by the fascist forces of India.”

She appealed to the Red Cross, Human Rights Watch and other human rights organizations to take note of the sufferings of inmates and impress upon India to immediately stop the atrocities on the inmates of Baramulla jail.

The statement said DeM is seriously concerned about the plight of the jail inmates including its incarcerated chairperson Syedah Aasiyeh Andrabi and her personnel secretary Fehmeeda Sofi.

“Aasiyeh is an orthopaedic and asthma patient. She regularly needs medical attention. Since no one is allowed to meet them, we are grievously concerned about their wellbeing,” Nasreen said. “Those in the jail who have been arrested for being the well-wishers of the freedom struggle are the assets of this nation and heroes of our younger generation. Therefore, the treatment meted out to them cannot be tolerated at any cost.”
