Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK) on Monday said that the authorities have directed doctors and paramedical staff, who due to prevailing situation, were being provided ambulances to reach hospital from their residences because of the non-availability of public transport and obvious security concerns, have been asked for the transportation.

“The authorities are forcing the employees to pay huge sums for transportation from hospital to home and vice-versa citing reasons better known to the authorities that Government has not provided any fuel charges to the hospitals for the said purpose,” a statement issued by DAK said.

DAK president Dr G M Mir condemned this “authoritarian approach” and asked the authorities was it a punishment to doctors and paramedical staff who risk their lives and make the hospital functioning 24×7?

“Doctors and Paramedics instead of being appreciated for their work are being harassed by such dictates,” he said.

It is pertinent to mention here that most of the district and sub-district hospitals in the valley do not have canteen and residential facilities which makes it impossible for the staff to remain stationed in huge numbers in the hospitals.

DAK had earlier intervened through higher authorities and had diffused this crisis when it first surfaced two months before when certain administrators had started asking money for transportation purpose.

The statement said that DAK appealed higher authorities at Ministerial and Directorate level to take appropriate steps so that the matter is solved without creating any hardships for Medical staff and the morale of Doctors and Paramedical staff is not compromised.
