Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has stressed the need for taking effective political measures for the resolution of the Kashmir issue and to provide healing touch to the pained people of the State.

“The basic idea behind the formation of PDP was to launch a struggle for doing away with the legacy of mistrust and animosity within the State and the region and to facilitate resolution of the Kashmir issue in an environment of peace and reconciliation and our party continues to pursue the same agenda,” PDP General Secretary Mohammad Sartaj Madni told the media-persons after meeting the visiting All Party Delegation, a statement issued by the ruling coalition partner said Monday evening.

“The PDP delegation conveyed to the members of the APD that the peace and political stability in Jammu and Kashmir could become a reality only by creating an institutionalized mechanism for dialogue and resolution within the state and in the region,” the PDP statement said.

During his brief stints in power in the State during 2002-2005 and 2015, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed tirelessly continued his struggle for the resolution of the problems of Jammu and Kashmir in a paradigm of cordial ties between India and Pakistan,” it added.

Observing that dealing with the problem of Kashmir is the biggest challenge before the BJP led NDA Government headed by Narendra Modi, Madni said, “a holistic approach needs to be adopted by the Government of India to win the hearts and minds of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.”

“It was because of the slew of intra-state and inter-state confidence building measures including revocation of POTA, opening of cross-LoC roads and reconstruction of infrastructure in J&K initiated by the Central and the State Government in 2003 that peace and prosperity had started taking roots in Kashmir after decades of turmoil,” he said and added, “unfortunately due to lack of political will and resolve to carry forward the confidence building process after Mufti Sahab demitted office in 2005, Kashmir slowly started slipping back into an era of uncertainty with mounting cynicism and alienation.”

Madni said, “the only way forward on Kashmir is to follow the path shown by former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee who initiated historic steps to normalize relations within the State and between India and Pakistan.”

“On the internal front PDP is strong votary of espousing the constitutional methods of finding resolution to the political problem and the issues confronting Jammu and Kashmir and safeguarding the State’s distinct identity and the special status,” he said.

Madni further said, “the need of the hour is to revive the reconciliation and resolution process through an institutionalized mechanism involving all sections of the State including the leadership of Hurriyat Conference.”

“The present situation in Kashmir calls for every right thinking party, group or individual to rise to the occasion and strive for finding ways and avenues for the restoration of peace and resolution of the problem,” he said and added, “to end the stalemate and rein in the vicious cycle of violence, the doors for purposeful, constructive and unconditional dialogue need to be opened.”

Urging separatists to come to the negotiating table, Madni said, “those having different political ideologies also need to realize that the issues can be resolved only through dialogue.”

“Even after wars and major conflicts around the world, the issues have been ultimately resolved through dialogue and same stands true for Jammu and Kashmir,” he maintained.

The PDP statement informed that other members of the PDP delegation who met APD included Qazi Mohammad Afzal, Nizam-ud-Din Bhat, Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari, Peerzada Mansoor Hussain, Javaid Hassan Beigh, Mohammad Khurshid Alam and others.
