Chief Minister Ms Mehbooba Mufti, on Saturday morning paid a surprise visit to Kund area of South Kashmir and to meet family of slain youth, Mashooq Ahmad.
According to the locals, early in the morning Ms Mehbooba Mufti’s chopper landed at 9RR army camp in the hilly Kund area and visited the family of Mashooq Ahmad, 19-year-old youth who was killed in the clashes with forces after the killing of popular militant commander Burhan Wani.
“When CM reached the area, there were protests already going on over the arrest of two people,” said a local. “As her cavalcade passed, clashes erupted between protesters and forces in which half a dozen people were injured.”
CM managed to reach the home of the slain youth at Karluu and expressed her sympathies with family.
However, soon people from Karluu village hit roads and started protests leading to violent day-long clashes.
Ms Mehbooba was accompanied by her uncle and PDP secretary general, Sartaj Madani.
Reports said that the house where Mehbooba Mufti met the bereaved family too hit by stones.
Amid tight security, Ms Mufti in hurry returned in the chopper but clashes continued, the locals said.
MLA Devsar, however, termed the CM’s visit as “salt on the wounds of the innocent people”. Kund area falls in Devsar assembly segment.
“This is not the way how a CM works, I am the MLA concerned and I don’t know about it,” said Mohammad Amin Bhat, MLA Devsar.
Wire news agency, CNS quoting an unnamed police official termed the reports “baseless” that stone-pelting incident occurred in the village at the time of Mehbooba’s presence in the village. “Extra security measures had been put in place in wake of Chief Minister’s visit.”
The reports said clashes between protestors and CRPF, Police and RR men are going on when this report was filed.
