Every fall of a year, people across continents observe “International Day of Persons with Disabilities (December 3)”. Kashmir too has chunk of its population with different disability challenges. Functions were held across J&K to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities. Designated by the United Nations, the day seeks to increase awareness of gains to be derived from the integration of persons with disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life. Early Thursday, scores of specially challenged persons reached city centre Lal Chowk to protest government apathy towards them.
Raising slogans the protestors said that the government has always been indifferent towards the disabled people of the valley and has never paid heed to their genuine demands.
The specially abled protestors were later bundled into police vehicles and taken to police station Kothi Bagh.
Students at Deaf and Dumb School, Rambagh celebrating the day. In 1976, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 1981 as the International Year of Disabled Persons.
The UN called for a plan of action at the national, regional and international levels, with an emphasis on equalization of opportunities, rehabilitation and prevention of disabilities.
