Two Kashmir Cancer Patients, Stories From UP, Punjab

SRINAGAR: On Sunday, two Kashmiri cancer patients were in news – one in Punjab and another in Utter Pradesh.

Chandigarh based newspaper Tribune reported that the Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh recently helped a Kashmiri student, who is suffering from colon cancer and ensured he is treated at the PGIMER, Chandigarh.

The student identified as Mujeeb Ahmad Malla, who is enrolled in a Jalandhar-based college was having problems in getting treatment at the hospital. After getting informed about the incident, Captain’s office coordinated with the students and the hospital.

“I see all Kashmiri students as part of our family and want all of you to look at Punjab as your second home,” Captain Singh tweeted later. “I and my government are always there for you.”

Not far away, in Utter Pardesh’s Bareilly jail another Kashmiri cancer patient was not even been permitted to get the medicine that his family had got for him, media reports said.

Identified as Parvaiz Ahmad Palla, 33, he was arrested under Public Safety Act (PSA) on August 6, after being declared a “threat to safety and security of general public and sovereignty of the nation”.

Quoting the family of the patient, a resident of Matibugh in Kulgam, The Indian Express reported that the family has now moved to the Jammu and Kashmir High Court seeking his release on medical grounds.

The newspaper quoted Dr Tanveer A Rather, additional professor head of Nuclear Medicine department at Srinagar’s SKIMS, saying that Palla is on “regular follow-up for further management of the disease and has to attend outpatient services on regular basis”. The letter had already been submitted to the district administration in Kulgam.

Despite being on life saving drugs, the police dossier – on basis of which he was arrested, alleges that Palla is “a hardcore OGW [Over Ground Worker]” of Hizb ul Mujahideen, a militant outfit. He has earlier been arrested as well and named in an FIR. Officials have told the newspaper that they will look into the case, afresh.

Palla is one of the many hundred people who were arrested in anticipation of August 5, and even after that. Some of them gave been shifted out of the state in different jails across India.
