At least 30 civilians have suffered injuries after police and CRPF fired pellets and teargas shells in main town Beerwah of Budgam district and Meemandar area of Shopian district.

Reports reaching here said that people were out on roads since Saturday morning protesting and raising slogans for Aazadi and in favour of Pakistan.

However, police and CRPF resorted to massive teargas shelling and pellet firing to disperse off the people, witnesses said.

They said that 20 of the injured have been admitted in local hospital for treatment. “Due to fear of reprisal, the rest of the injured have consulted local blacksmiths and compounders for treatment.”

Reports also said that a local shopkeeper was also arrested from the town.

Sources in Beerwah said that a local youth was injured after a police vehicle over ran him.

“He has suffered fracture in his leg and is being treated in a Srinagar hospital.”

Meanwhile, reports reaching here from Shopian said that forces went berserk in Meemander area after people had blocked the roads leading to the village.

Sources said that at around 4 pm almost a dozen police and CRPF vehicles appeared on the scene and started tear gas shelling and pellet firing on the bystanders.

“They entered our homes and ransacked our homes, smashed windowpanes and lobbed stun grenades inside our lawns,” witnesses said.

At least half-a-dozen people have suffered pellet and shell injuries.

A group of locals told Kashmir Life over phone that the angry policemen also fired shells on the electric transformers leaving them dysfunctional.
