SRINAGAR
A family from Lawaypora in Srinagar outskirts Saturday accused a police officer of ‘harassment’. The family members who had assembled at Press Enclave Srinagar alleged that on the behest of a retired government official, the “Reader of SP West Srinagar” has been “harassing” them and the said officer extorted Rs 19,400 from them while interrogating one of their male members.
Talking to reporters, the Lawaypora resident Abdul Gani Parray said, “from 2007, there was a dispute going on a piece of land between him and a retired government official. I was supposed to pay Rs 31, 76,000 to the official but few arbitrators penalized me and instead of the actual sum I paid Rs 38, 00000 to him to settle the matter once for all in 2012. After passing of three years, now the official has started demanding more money from me.”
He said that the official approached ADC Srinagar, but the latter advised the official to approach court. “The official ironically has approached SP West who has entrusted the job to his ‘Reader’. The ‘Reader’ of the SP West has been threatening me of dire consequences in case I did not pay Rs 10 lakh more to the official. He frequently calls me to his office and there he not only abuses me but also tortures me. A few days back, the said ‘Reader’ of the SP West snatched Rs 19,400 from my pocket,” Parray alleged.
The protesting family members appealed DG and IG police to look into the matter. “The said police officer frequently calls my son to the police station and harasses him. I personally appeal to the authorities to probe the matter and do justice with us,” said octogenarian mother of Parray.
When contacted the ‘Reader’ of the SP West told CNS that he has been performing his duty and there is nothing personal in it. “Neither I abuse nor did I torture him. There is not an iota of truth in his claims,” he said.
SP West Paramvir Singh while terming the allegations baseless said that they received a complaint against Abdul Gani Parray and they have been verifying the matter.
