Senior Kashmiri journalist Iftikhar Gilani, currently heading Delhi Bureau of Mumbai based DNA, has objected to NC leader and former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s claims related to Afzal Guru hanging. Gilani claims Omar was in know of hanging in anticipation and his statement could have “allowed Guru lawyers to move Supreme Court to get a reprieve”.

“What had transpired in the meeting between him and Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde at North Block on January 30, some 10 days before Guru was executed?,” Gilani commented on Facebook linking Omar’s statement. “Had Shinde confided Omar and why the latter didn’t make a fuss and put his foot down?”

“On Feb 8 evening, why Shinde on phone told Omar, “Jo Baat Us Din Hoi Thi, Woh Kal Ho Raha Hai. Take care?,” Gilani wrote. “The circumstances show, Omar was in know of things. He could have spilled the beans and allowed Guru lawyers to move Supreme Court to get a reprieve.” The scribe has suggested Omar and NC spokespersons “to come clean…”

Omar in an interview has stated the Guru hanging had “political reasons” and he was informed “only hours before”. Former Chief Minister has reiterated that he was informed of the hanging on the eve of it when he was out on a dinner with his sister and he was asked to take care of the implications in the state.

Guru, convicted for Parliament Attack, was hanged on February 9, 2013, though he was at serial No 28 in the list of convicts waiting for gallows. Incidentally none of them was hanged later. Guru hanging was one of the factors that played against Omar’s re-election to office in 2014.

But Gilani is not the first persons who had disputed Omar’s hanging claims.

Former Union Home Secretary R K Singh has already stated entire UPA including its member NC was on board on hanging, codenamed ‘operation three star’. His reaction came first time when Dr Farooq Abdullah, then a minister in UPA government, had accused Singh of plotting the hanging.

“Farooq Sahab should first have discussed the matter with his own son and present Chief Minister of State, Omar Abdullah before making such wild allegations,” Singh said on April 21, 2014. “Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah is part of the UPA led coalition Government and was very well kept in loop when the Union Home Minister had ordered implementation of Operation three-star.”

Singh asserted Dr Farooq Abdullah was perhaps not aware of the facts. “He should first hold detailed discussion with his son. If he is still not satisfied with the ground realities, then I would advise him to contact his own Cabinet Colleague at the Centre — Sushil Kumar Shinde, who is present Union Home Minister,” Singh said while campaigning for his election in Lok Sabha. “I would also suggest that Mr Abdullah seek an appointment with Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh and hold detailed interaction with him on all the issues pertaining to Afzal Guru. I’m pretty sure that after meeting the Prime Minister, Union Home Minister and even after talking with his own son, he would have nothing to say”.

Gilani has even drawn parallels between Afzal Guru and Maqbool Bhat. “Identically, a similar act was enacted on Maqbool Bhat execution as well,” Gilani wrote. “When Magistrate Poater Singh was called into then CM Farooq Abdullah’s chamber and asked to sign black warrant…”
