Snowfall damages thousands of Apple trees

Thousands of fruit and other trees suffered a massive damage due to the heavy snowfall, witnessed throughout Kashmir since last two days.


Apple trees in particular have suffered damage due to unexpected snowfall. Fruit growers have complained that they suffered heavy losses due to snowfall.


Thousands of apple trees can either be seen with broken branches or uprooted.


Pertinently, the fruit growers had recently sprayed different sort of oils on their trees.


Official sources said that the most affected areas were in south Kashmir, particularly Shopian which received heavy snowfall.


Abdul Ahad, a fruit grower of Shopian told Kashmir Life, “We are witnessing very less crop from last 4 years and were expecting a good crop this year but nature disposes off all our expectations by this snow Tsonami.”


He demanded that government should immediately depute a team of experts to assess the damage caused to fruit trees due to the snowfall.


Ahad, said “a number of trees are uprooted due to snow.”


Similar complaints have also reached from Keller, Mastpora, Zoura, Narpora, Manloo, Wathoo, Ganwapora, Balepora, Geerwar , Zainapora, Imamsahab, Chitragam, DK Pora , Vehil Kachdora , Daangam, Choudrigund, Meemandhar, Palpora , Heerpora, Sedow and Chotipora areas of the hill district.


Reports reaching Srinagar said that it was still snowing in different places of Kashmir including Shopian.


Reports said that people in the hill district were desperately waiting for snowfall to stop so that they could reach to their orchards and save the remaining trees.
